Jens Newig is Professor of Governance and Sustainability at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany, where he heads the research group on Governance, Participation and Sustainability. Trained as an interdisciplinary environmental scientist with degrees from the Universities of Bayreuth and Paris, he obtained his PhD in Environmental Law from Dresden Technical University. He served as Assistant Professor at the Institute of Environmental Systems Research at Osnabrück University, where he obtained his Habilitation in Political Science. His current research focuses on the effectiveness and legitimacy of participatory and multi-level governance, social network analysis, and transitions to sustainability. He is leading a number of research projects on topics related to WaterScale, including Environmental Consequences of Participatory Environmental Governance  (funded by the DFG) and Evaluating the Delivery of Environmental Governance using an Evidence-Based Research Design  (ERC Starting Grant).

Dr. Timothy Moss is Deputy Director of the Leibniz Institute for Regional
Development and Structural Planning (IRS) in Erkner, Germany, where he heads
the research department Institutional Change and Regional Public Goods. He has a B.A. in European Studies from Sussex University, an M.Phil. in Modern European History from Oxford University, where he also obtained his doctorate in German municipal history. His special research interests are in the governance of urban infrastructures in transition (from the early twentieth century to the present day), the spatial organisation of water management and the sustainable development of cities and regions in Europe. Within the WaterScale project cluster he leads the IRS project ReScale, supervising all work on this project and contributing with conceptual and methodological inputs to the research as well as networking with relevant academics and practitioners.

 

Frank Hüesker

Frank Hüesker is a political scientist working on institutions of river basin and water infrastructure management. In more general terms his research focuses on the legitimacy and problem solving capacity of political institutions regulating regional common goods. He is looking forward to working in the RescalE project with the aim of analysing shifts in power relations withing the implementation of EU's environmental policies.

Daniel Schulz is an environmental scientist whose work focusses on sustainability communication and participatory forms of governance. In the GoScaLE project he analyzes how the structure of governance scales and levels impacts the participatory implementation of the Water Framework Directive.
